The American Grilled Cheese – Gluten-Free in SF

Gluten-Free Grilled Cheese in San Francisco

Grilled cheese AND gluten-free?!  Just like Mac-N-Cheese and gluten-free, these words aren’t usually found together, but the American Grilled Cheese Kitchen is all that it is hyped up to be.  Awesome location in San Francisco’s South Park neighborhood; near Jeremy’s (grilled cheese + shopping, can’t go wrong) and the Ballpark.

I ordered a classic: “Piglet:” Tillamook sharp cheddar, artisan cured ham, apple mustard, rosemary butter.  The gluten-free bread was amazing.  AMAZING. And they make the bread there; it isn’t ported in from some other bakery or mass manufactured.  I love that they cut the bread super thick like Texas Toast, before grilling it to perfection (with the cheese grilled into crispy bits on the outside).

It was the end of a busy Sunday when we stopped in, so they were starting to close up. I can’t wait to come back again soon and try all the other sandwiches!

PS. I didn’t get to try, but they offer Gluten-Free Mac-N-Cheese as well?!

Gluten-free dining in San Francisco

Zadin featured in SFGateGluten-free dining is getting more and more press and exposure these days, which I love, because it not only increases awareness  in the public eye, but within the restaurant industry, making it all the more easier for gluten-free folks like ourselves to safely eat gluten-free when dining out. (Yay!) An article on sfgate.com today focuses on the growing number of delicious gluten-free friendly restaurants in San Francisco. The article names some of my SF favorites, such as Ike’s gluten-free sandwiches or incredible Saha. I look forward to try the many other places listed and updated my Gluten-Free Restaurants List for your convenience.  Check them out and let me know your favorites!

Harvest Market: gluten free sandwiches in Walnut Creek

Harvest Market, Walnut Creek's newest organic, sustainable Cafe, serving Gluten-Free Sandwiches

UPDATE: CLOSED :(

Welcome Harvest Market to Walnut Creek! Thanks to one of the local Mom’s group, I discovered this great organic, sustainable, friendly and gluten-free friendly restaurant-cafe.

Harvest Market prides in sourcing local, organic ingredients (from purveyors within 50-miles of Walnut Creek) and also offers gluten-free and dairy free options (such as soy cream cheese, perfect for my lactose-free husband).

You choose from a variety of breads (including Udi’s and Mariposa’s gluten-free breads), Meats, Cheese, Spreads (such as pesto and soy cream cheese) and many other condiments (kalamata olives or tofu among others).

There’s also a fresh soup and salad bar, with (always at least one) vegetarian option and sometimes vegan soup options.

Organic and healthy details include organic beverages and snacks too: from Honest Tea to Coconut Water and Pop Chips.  Since I am also allergic to corn and related products (such as high fructose corn syrup/HFCS), it’s also nice to be able to grab from a variety of beverages made from all natural ingredients.

Come by and give it a try; say hello to Damian the Owner and his friendly staff.

Harvest Market even provides interesting tidbits on Gluten and Celiac Disease

Ubuntu Napa

Ubuntu Restaurant, Napa

Words aren’t going to be able to describe Ubuntu’s food, but I will try! The meal presentation is stunning and each bite is flavorful and mouthwatering. Definitely try the Garden Snake. Despite the scary name, this combination of fresh roots, greens, herbs, flowers and who knows what else, is totally yummy. All the dishes are vegetarian, made from their own crop of fresh vegetables. We left there full, satiated, but feeling great (not over-stuffed). Book a yoga class as well at their adjoining studio for a full day of feel-good yumminess.

Italian made gluten-free pasta

Rustichella Artisanal Gluten-Free Pasta

I relish over the few months I lived abroad in Florence, Italy, during my undergrad days. There truly is nothing like real, homemade Italian pasta. Since going gluten-free, I’ve been searching for a gluten-free pasta that has that perfect texture, as an Italian-made pasta.

Thanks to Rustichella pasta, those that partake in gluten-free dining can enjoy the wonderful consistency and taste of Italian made pasta (made from corn or rice), without the gluten!  Perfect with fresh herbs, your favorite sauce, or a little pancetta, olive oil and garlic, this pasta will not disappoint.

Can be found at Market Hall in Oakland, CA or online.

San Francisco and Gluten-Free Dining

I love living in the Bay Area, for a million reasons, but most especially because of the incredible cuisine that originates from San Francisco and it’s nearby communities (and of course our fabulous weather).

That said, it’s sometimes feels like a struggle to find gluten-free friendly places within San Francisco limits.  But this 7×7 article sure proves me wrong… While I have devoured an Ike’s sandwich, this gluten-free-friendly article has put a number of restaurants on my must-visit list, including: Canteen, Zare at Fly Trap, American Grilled Cheese Kitchen, and Bacco.  Time to get my opentable reservations in order!

homeroom: gluten free mac and cheese (and more)

T

Our Mac and Cheese girls night out (+ 2 toddlers) was a complete success.

We snagged one of the last tables (without having a long wait) promptly at 6 pm on a Tuesday night.

An array of cheesy (and one vegan) choices and of course, the long-awaited gluten free pasta (well worth the +$1.50).

My fellow GF friend loved her Bard’s Sorghum Beer; I tried the fresh tangy limeade, and some of the ladies went with the wine pairings with their mac and cheeses: chevre and sharp goat cheddar vs. pecorino and peppercorn.  Wine pairings with mac and cheese?  How much more delicious can it get.

Wonderful time was had by all; I plan to return many, many times to try the other versions.  Great service too! (and the chalkboard access for little kiddies is a huge plus).

Red Door Cafe & Glutton (Gluten) Free options

Words can’t describe this unique San Francisco brunch place.  Well, maybe a few:

TINY (seats less than 20)
kitchy
delicious
gluten-free (options available)
Ahmed (once you’ll go, you’ll understand)

Visit on a weekday morning (I know, we all work… but take a morning off; it’s worth it); weekends are packed and be prepared for a looooong wait.

Many vegan options and if you’re super nice (and cool) Ahmed the owner will tell you what he can make GF for you.  I had the Glutton-Free French toast and it was amazing.
